I want to recommend this book to everyone. Here are some reasons.
1. Well Developed Characters
Personally, I think character is the most important thing in the novel. Although some characters in I Am Number Four are quite dependent on stereotypes (for example, Sam Goode = Astronomy Nerd, bullied by Mark James, a football player), even those characters reveal their unique personalities and charisma. Especially, I liked the main character, John Smith. This novel carefully, clearly indicates how John is growing up, developing dual identities as Loric and human. Also, I liked the concept that each Loric Garde has his or her unique magical power, because it means that each Loric character in I Am Number Four can have his or her unique characteristic.
2. Fairly realistic, Interesting Story
Even though I Am Number Four is talking about an alien conspiracy, this book’s plot sounds quite realistic and convincing. (It doesn’t mean that I really believe those conspiracies.) This book was more interesting and believable than other alien conspiracies to me, because of the concept that aliens can be my neighbors and friends. Also, it was really fresh that two different kinds of aliens fight against each other on the earth. However, it would have been better if the novel had avoided the cliche of conflicts between good and evil. Also, it would have been better if the author did not use youth's love or youthful passion as main driving force of the plot.
3. Movie I Am Number Four (2010)
After I read the book I Am Number Four, I watched the movie, I Am Number Four (2010). Despite several differences, I liked the movie, too. It would be great if you read the book and then watch movie, or vice versa. The movie really summed up the whole story, so it can be a disappointment to some people, who really values flow of the story. I will give four stars out of five stars to this movie. I was shocked when I saw Bernie Kosar, which changed to his real identity in order to fight against Mogadorians, because his face and body were totally different from what I expected. It was really weird, but I admire the graphic design.
